Well. If you haven’t heard it yet, check it out below. It’s called Don’t Go, and it’s based on Jim Guthrie’s already excellent Sword & Sworcery EP track, Maelstrom.

Did you take many drawing classes? what are some books that would be good on learning more? And what is some advice to anyone who wants to get better at it?

I actually kind of touched on this subject a few weeks ago (which you can read here, it’s a similar question) but this is a bit more specific to training and advice.

You’ve probably heard this before and you’re probably tired of hearing it but the only way you can get better at drawing is to draw. You’re going to make a bunch of drawings at first that frustrate you with their crappiness, but as long as you take it seriously and push yourself and continue to evaluate what you’re doing you’ll get better. My drawing skills slowly increased over time because I enjoy drawing and doodling and I’ve been steadily creating stuff my whole life. You just can’t beat actual experience.

Books and classes are good to focus you and help you evaluate where you’d like to go with your art and how to get there. Technique, tools, desk setups - all these things matter very little. Some of the very best art comes from people who create work wherever and whenever they’re inspired. I’ve seen cocktail napkin sketches that are more vibrant and technically better drawn than pieces people have spent weeks on.

I say this often, but it bears repeating. Artistic skill is not a magic trick. It just takes hard work and a serious commitment to refining your work and getting experience.

I took classes in high school and college but for the most part they just served to give me a set place and time to create a specific kind of art (illustration, graphic design, life drawing) and get experience that way. You’d be surprised how other disciplines and branching out will help contribute to whatever you want to do. I did a lot of model drawing and still life drawing and more naturalistic sketches in college, which helped me understand the basic shape of objects and animals and anatomy. My graphic design background helps me think of layouts. Even my time spent cooking has helped my art in that it gets me centered and reminds me that preparation and mise en place are important for execution.

If you’re really into drawing anime and manga style art, for example, try doing some still life drawing with charcoal. Be thoughtful with texture and shade and composition and notice things like line weight and how it changes the overall feeling of whatever you’re creating. Then, try incorporating some of those skills learned in your charcoal still life drawings with your manga-style drawings. Hooray! You’ve gained a skill point. Your art is incrementally better.

Here are some of my favorite art books to get you started. Some are instructional, some are purely inspirational but easy to break down process from.

Understanding Comics: The Invisible Art

How To Draw Comics The Marvel Way

Faeries: Deluxe Collector’s Edition

Jim Henson: The Works - The Art, the Magic, the Imagination

Just carry a notebook and a pencil around with you wherever you go. Draw what you see, not what you know. If you feel frustrated every time you draw a hand and say to yourself “self, I just cannot draw hands” then fill a notebook up with drawings of your own hands. I guarantee by the last page you’ll have drawn a hand you like. Base all your future hand drawings on the understanding gained from that process. Repeat for everything, until you die.

Some sketches for Kickstarter backer rewards for the Zero Suit...

Some sketches for Kickstarter backer rewards for the Zero Suit Samus book.
